Comfort women.
Are they merely a face of the past? Just finished my part of the history project. As I was cracking my brains for a topic, I thought of comfort women almost immediately.
An estimated number of 200 000 women became sex slaves during the Japanese Occupation, out of which 80% were Koreans. On average, a comfort women has sex with 20-30 soldiers a day. Refuse, and say hello to torture, or sometimes, death.
Can you imagine girls our age, OUR AGE, being whisked away from their families and sent to a comfort centre to serve the Japanese?
It makes my skin crawl.
The trauma and horrors of it all must have stayed on with them, long after the Japanese Occupation ended.
To the women who were so brave,
I salute you.
